Mr Trials – 71/100

I hate to make comparisons two weeks in a row, but that’s almost impossible with Mr Trials. A blocky, basic version of any of the numerous Trials games from Red Lynx.

Paging Mr Trials

Mr Trials, incase you aren’t aware of the other Trials games, is a dirt bike racing game. In the sense that you are racing yourself while traversing different obstacles. The only controls are to accelerate, reverse, and lean forwards or backwards.

Some of the obstacles require you to lean certain ways to manipulate your wheels over them. If all else fails, speed is your friend. Until its not. Each level has coins you can collect that you can use to play a minigame that rewards new skins. You can also complete flips to earn points that rewards you with a gold helmet. The gold helmet doesn’t do anything, but if you like a challenge then its there for you.

The levels themselves start out fairly easy. Hitting ramps and jumping over gaps. Doing flips if you want. Nothing crazy. As you progress, things start to get a little dicey. You have to maximize your speed by hitting ramps in succession to jump large gaps. Time your leans to bunny hop over gaps with no ramp. Eventually it starts to take a little more skill than just drive fast.

My Bike!

There are certain levels that are a little more frustrating than others. And I got stuck. A lot. I will say that it wasn’t game breaking in any way. It just takes a little perseverance and some trial and error. Honestly, it just clicked for me why the name Trials works in more way than one.

The skins for the bike and character are cute in a Crossy Road kind of way. Which is another game this reminds me of, at least in the way it looks. Weirdly enough, I was about to say something about how I think Mr Trials would work better as a mobile game. Something was telling me I should check the app store first and sure enough, there it is.

Currently Mr Trials is on the Apple App store for free, with ads I’m assuming. But that model makes so much more sense for this game. Especially since the price went up to $2.99 on Steam. As fun as the game is, I would much rather play for free and have to deal with a few ads.

I’m a Loner, Dottie

I did end up downloading Mr Trials on my phone to try it out. It runs much more smoothly and the functionality is way better. There is a restart level button in the top corner that is easily accessible. And the virtual controls don’t get in the way of the action. It’s a vastly better experience.

Unfortunately that does kind of screw up my format. Free games were never something I intended to play here, but I can’t in good faith advise you pay $2.99 for a worse version of this game. And I’m not going to pick a new game to start playing today and write about later tonight, so we’re going to let this one ride, and do better next time.
